Manifold land relief, nutrient rich soil and cliffs, unique local climate and open eastern side of Olanga river valley and Paanajarvi basin – due to these factors Paanajarvi region is known by its rich biodiversity.
All taxonomic groups include rare species. 238 local animals have been brought to Red Data Book of Karelia, Russia and IUCN.
There you may meet a reindeer, see a white-tailed eagle hovering above the cliffs, admire amazing orchids – Calypso and Lady's-slipper; near the pure water you could watch a nimble Dipper, on a mountain top you would enjoy bloomy purple mountain heather; in taiga you could admire Usnea lichen and wonderful lung lichen.
