Building of environmental awareness in citizens is one of the main tasks of the National Park.
Ecological education activities of the Park are aimed at promotion of ideas of conservation of biological and landscape diversity in broad masses of population, assisting in building up of environmental awareness and development of ecological culture.
A department of ecological education was formed in the Park for this purpose comprising 3 specialists.
Specialists of this department are master minders of all ecological education activities and closely cooperate with educational institutions in the region and in the republic. Ecological school established in the Park works with all strata of the society.
Specialists of the department together with school teachers prepare methodological material and visual aids, conduct thematic classes, conferences. They engage schoolchildren of all ages in environmental actions, contests and quizzes, lectures and talks, excursions, ecological camps and expeditions.
Another important activity is work with pre-school institutions. Special programs, thematic classes, excursions and games are organized for the young children.
Local people are engaged in the nature protection activities through various events, festivals, exhibitions and thematic days.
Popularization of ecological culture and informing the public and local citizens about the activities of the protected nature territories is implemented through the mass media. Internet site of the National Park is a powerful instrument of information.
Active promotion and publishing policy, printing of booklets, posters and flyers, calendars, flags and stickers, of various souvenir products with the Park’s logos is another method of building environmental awareness.
The main educational sites of the Park are the visitor centre in Pjaozerski township, museum of nature, library, ecological camp in Vartiolampi, history-and-culture museum ‘Karelian house’, information centre ‘Vartiolampi’, ecological trails in the nature territory.
